April 6, 2012

BOSTON - Another April means another PAX East, and gamers all over the country couldn't be happier. The Penny Arcade Expo East at the Boston Convention Center is the East Coast version of the Penny Arcade Expo, a video game convention in Seattle that has exploded in popularity over the last decade.

PAX East 2012, running from April 6 to 8, attracts tens of thousands of gamers eager to see the biggest upcoming titles the gaming industry has to offer, in addition to classic video games, tabletop games, and other popular geek culture pursuits. Major video game publishers will show off new projects, including Rockstar Games, Microsoft, Nintendo, and more. This will be gamers' first chance to get a glimpse of titles like Max Payne 3 and Lollipop Chainsaw, and even get some hands-on time with the games.

Besides video game previews, PAX East holds gaming tournaments and activities of all kinds. Freeplay areas let gamers play PC and console games past and present, and a large tabletop gaming area offers pen-and-paper RPG and collectible card gameplay to fans of more hands-on gaming. Several musical guests including the Protomen and the Minibosses will hold a video game music concert in the middle of it all.

The Penny Arcade Expo started in 2004 as the extenion and growth of NecrowombiCon, a gathering of fans of the Penny Arcade comic. Initial attendance was a few thousand, but that number grew to over 60,000 by 2009. In 2010, the PAX East show launched, providing an East Coast version of the expo. It was so popular that the year after it moved from the Hynes Convention Center to the Boston Convention and Exposition Center, which has double the floor space. 70,000 people are expected to attend over the weekend.
