Froggies is a boardgame-inspired puzzler that sees the player try and remove all frogs from the screen, taking into account various limitations. Despite a strong start, this free version of the game has a tiny sample of what’s on offer, and players will be finished with it inside of 20 minutes.

Each level starts with a number of frogs sitting on a board, which is divided up into tiles. By tapping a frog, the player will see the range at which it can jump. The idea is that the player must remove all but one frog from the board, and they only disappear when one frog jumps over the top of another.

To add another layer to the challenge, there are various colour frogs, which each have different abilities. Green frogs can only jump vertically and horizontally; yellow frogs can jump vertically, horizontally and diagonally; blue frogs don’t disappear when jumped over, but instead turn into a green frog, and red frogs can move one square without having to jump over a frog, but in doing so they turn green. There is one more frog, but that’s locked out in the free version.

It’s an interesting idea, and one that I can see getting quite addictive. Unfortunately the free version can be completed very quickly due to the 20 levels on offer being from the “very easy” difficulty mode. A handful of the harder challenges would have made paying to unlock the other levels all the more enticing.

Froggies also links up with Game Center, providing the player with 34 achievement s to unlock, although most seem relatively easy to obtain. Facebook and Twitter integration are also supported.

Froggies is an easy game to recommend. Although the levels provided are on the simple side, the potential is there for some extremely challenging later levels, especially on the “hard difficulty” which comes as part of the $1.99 bundle.
