Q&A: Slinging Photos Between Devices

Q.

Q. I just bought the new third-generation iPad. I had an iPod Touch and synced it to iTunes on a PC. How do I transfer photos and videos I took with the iPod onto the new iPad?

A.

If you are syncing content to your iPod Touch and iPad through iTunes, one way to transfer the photos is to import the pictures from the iPod’s Camera Roll to the computer first. To do this, connect the iPod Touch to the PC and when the Windows AutoPlay box pops up, click on the “Import pictures and videos” option to copy the files to a folder on your computer; details are here.

Next, disconnect the iPod and connect the iPad to the computer. Click on the iPad icon in iTunes and then on the Photos tab in the window. Turn on the checkbox next to Sync Photos From and use the drop-down menu to select the folder of photos you just imported. Click the sync button to copy them to the iPad. Apple has details here.

If you do not sync the iPad with iTunes, you can copy the photos to the tablet wirelessly with Apple’s Photo Stream feature, but you do need an iCloud account and software for your PC. Apple has a frequently asked questions page and setup instructions for Photo Stream here. After you turn on Photo Stream on all your iOS devices and computer, import the iPod’s photos to the PC to copy the old photos — and any future pictures — to the iPad. (As for videos, you can send short clips and photos by e-mail or iMessage.)
