AMD Mulling MIPS Bid?

This article is more than 10 years old.

Advance Micro Devices is a potential bidder for the microprocessor design licensing company MIPS Technologies, according to the tech blog site BSN. Bloomberg last week reported that, according to "people with knowledge of the decision," MIPS has hired Goldman Sachs to search for a buyer.

MIPS so far has not commented on the report.

MIPS takes an approach similar to that used by ARM Holdings, creating chip designs and then licensing them to other manufacturers. The BSN post points out that MIPS has more than 500 patents.

While MIPS shares spiked on the news last week, investors aren't all that impressed with the AMD rumor; MIPS shares today are down 3 cents, at $6.28.
