Apple departed from tradition this year when it released the its new iPad. This time, the tablet is slightly (0.6 mm) thicker and heavier (0.11 lbs) than last year's iPad 2.

So why is the new iPad thicker and heavier?

CNET spoke with Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies for his opinion. Soneira says Apple's original intention was to use new screen tech by Sharp that would allow for the new iPad's larger battery, yet keep the device just as thin as before.

Unfortunately, Sharp didn't have the new display ready in time. Soneira even called the new iPad "Plan B" for Apple.

Keep in mind this is just one industry insider's analysis. Don't take his opinion as gospel.
