There’s no denying that photo apps have become increasingly more popular ever since the iPhone camera hardware was improved. Finding the perfect camera and photo app that suits users’ needs almost seemed impossible until Bright Mango’s recent release of Wood Camera.

Wood Camera sets the bar high for photo apps with its multitude of features. From 22 real-time live lenses and flexible editing features to advanced touch rotation gestures, it's clear that the developers packed Wood Camera with all the basic essentials for everyone from iPhoneographers to amateurs.

There are three ways for users to get started: snap photos with the camera to use real-time lens effects, paste pictures into the app from the internet or select photos on the iOS device. Users can then easily begin the editing process by applying frames, cropping pictures, adding textures and even utilizing tilt-shit controls.

After editing an image, users can access the original photo by tapping and holding on an image in edit mode to see all the applied changes. Photos may then be shared via Facebook, email, Twitter, Flickr and Instagram. Images may also be exported directly to the Camera Roll.

There were two features that I particularly liked the most. The first is the lightbox interface on the main screen. This makes it possible for users to import, view and edit their photos all in one location. Also, the app saves all images up to 8mp at full resolution, which is a nice bonus. The other feature is that the app lets users go back and make changes to an original image, even after the photograph has been exported.

Wood Camera is a well-designed and impressive photo app, but it isn’t perfect. It lacks shutter settings, a zoom option and integration of other features that more popular camera apps include. Making an iPad or universal version of the app would utilize the real estate of the bigger screen as well as give users the option to see their photos on the retina display of the new iPad. My last complaint is that photos can only be imported into the app five at a time, which is quite time consuming.

Wood Camera is essential for users looking for a camera app or those who are in the market for a new one. It’s fast, reliable and suits the needs of most users—not to mention its slick user interface. Before checking out Wood Camera, be sure to update your device to iOS 5.1 or later or you won’t be able to download the app.
