HTC Pledges to Finish 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Upgrades by August

HTC plans to finish upgrading its Android devices to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, by this August.

The phone maker said on its website that it intends to upgrade the majority of its devices during the months of June and July, and be complete by August.

Devices slated for an upgrade in June and July include the , Desire S, EVO 3D, EVO 4G+, EVO Design 4G, Incredible S, Sensation, , Sensation XE, Sensation XL, , Rhyme, Velocity 4G, and . Several devices won't be upgraded to ICS until August, including the Droid Incredible 2, Desire HD, and Thunderbolt, HTC said.

While HTC is shooting for these deadlines, it warned that the actual rollout may shift due to testing and approvals.

"Because of partner and network testing, and approval processes for device updates, it can take up to 45 days for all carriers and countries to get the update after a rollout has begun," HTC said.

HTC provided details on which phones would receive ICS , but today's release provides a more clear rollout timeline.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich made its debut in the U.S. on the for Verizon in mid-December. Since then, only a handful of devices have debuted with the updated OS, but handset manufacturers have been hustling to upgrade existing smartphones to ICS.

HTC has released several ICS-based smartphones of late, but two devices - the and - have been delayed in the U.S. thanks to a . Sprint the EVO 4G LTE to those who pre-ordered it later this month, but no word on when the One X will make its way to more customers.

As of May 1, just were running Ice Cream Sandwich, according to stats released by Google. In early April it was on about 3 percent of Android devices, which was up from 1.12 percent in February and 0.6 percent in January.
