Apple to "Pull String" And Introduce iTV OS Demo at WWDC on June 11

This article is more than 10 years old.

Jonathan Geller of BGR (aka Boy Genius Report) says he has, "learned from a trusted source that Apple is planning to demonstrate a brand new version of the Apple TV operating system next week at WWDC." According to the report, what Apple will introduce at its World Wide Developers Conference on June 11, will not just be an update of the software that runs the existing Apple TV, but a demo of the software that will power its rumored forthcoming Smart TV or 'iTV'.

Geller goes on the say that he's "heard Apple is actively trying to court manufacturers to use a new 'control out' API in order for third-party manufacturers to make accessories that are compatible with the new Apple TV OS and the upcoming 'iTV.' It’s said that by using the API, it will be possible to control any connected components all from the Apple remote (and the Apple remote iOS app as well, we’re assuming)." Referring back to my own speculations this weekend, this would potentially put the control of any home theater component in the hands of anyone with an iOS device in the room. In Apple aligned households, that's just about everyone from a toddler on up to grandpa.

BGR concludes that "our source believes Apple won’t actually show its physical TV at WWDC, but it’s certainly possible." Far from feeling like Apple is "doubling down on secrecy" as Cook insisted last night, I'm feeling, more and more, that there is a very intimate dance going on between the company, its suppliers and the blogosphere. I feel like we are all being prepped, groomed and aroused in anticipation of Apple's upcoming products so that by the time they appear, both the products—and our purchase of them—seem completely 'inevitable' (to use Jony Ives's term).

Tim Cook referred last night to "pulling the string" on the Apple TV, but he was really pulling our string to see where we would go. And where everyone's minds seem to be going, at least mine and Jonathan Geller's, is towards an increasing certainty that an actual Apple-branded TV is in the offing.
