Hackers Crack iOS 6

This article is more than 10 years old.

Why do they even bother? The hackers at Dev-team have jailbroken iO6 only three days after Apple announced its new operating system. Twitter user @Musclenerd tweeted this earlier today: “In the spirit of the "experimental ecosystem" JBers provide, we're releasing a DEVELOPER-only tethered JB for iOS 6 (no Cydia, just SSH).”

For the uninitiated, a “JB,” also known as a “jailbreak,” is a hack that gives users and developers root access to the code on an iOS operating system, allowing them to use unauthorized applications, up to and including mobile carriers not approved by Apple. Apple likes to keep a tight lid on what its devices can and can’t do, but they have an incredibly difficult time doing so, as this hack proves.

iOS 6 is only in Beta right now, so this new jailbreak is definitely a developer tool before it’s a consumer tool – Cydia, which functions like a black market app store, is not yet available. If you’re still curious, Redmondpie has more.
