Earlier this month Autodesk picked up some powerful Apple iOS-based technology and solutions for its AECO (architects, engineers, contractors, owners) customers with its acquisition of Massachusetts-based Vela Systems.

With that acquisition comes the entire suite of Vela Systems’ field and cloud data AECO management software tools. “Vela Systems has been a longstanding partner of Autodesk, and has been leading the charge in the field,” said Josh Kanner, co-founder of Vela Systems. “The confluence of cloud computing, [Apple] iOS mobile devices like the iPad and BIM has enabled a new way to deliver and manage construction projects of all types.”

02 - To say the iPad is popular in AEC in the field is a huge understatement. The confluence of the cloud, BIM and the iPad is revolutionizing workflow innovation in AEC.

Vela Systems’ products are capable of being integrated with Autodesk Navisworks and thus give AECO customers a complete comprehensive set of integration, analysis and communication tools that can carry BIM management into the field.

Vela Mobile iPad is the key mobile application from the company that brings BIM data to the field, capturing that critical ‘last 100 yards’ in the process. Vela Mobile for ipad enables construction team members to create and update issues in the field, reference project documentation and run QA/QC, Safety and Commissioning checklists throughout all project phases–anywhere on the job site–with or without an Internet connection.  The application is free and it requires other Vela Systems technologies.
