WhoSampled Analyzes Your Favorite Songs And Reveals Their DNA

June 19, 2012
Today's young generation of music lovers may not need Shazam or SoundHound to recognize Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" as soon as it plays on the stereo. But I doubt that a lot of them, or, rather, a lot of us, know that that song heavily samples "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" by Michael Jackson. Well, if they'd only download WhoSampled, then they'd be in the know in no time. WhoSampled is a brand new iOS app released by the music discovery site of the same name. It brings the site's huge database — apparently the world's largest — of music samples, remixes, and covers. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. To start seeing the app's musical mojo in action, you can do a search for an artist or song whose sampling data you want to view. Alternatively, and more interestingly, you can let the app scan your device's music library. The app then determines who among your favorite artists have sampled or covered other artists. Likewise, it shows you which artists have sampled or covered them. You can compare the different versions of the sampled songs by listening to them through such video services as YouTube and VEVO. Links to purchase the songs from iTunes are also readily accessible. Coinciding with the launch of its official iPhone app, WhoSampled has also released an infographic about music sampling. The infographic reveals a number of fascinating statistics. Want to know who's the most sampled artist in history? How about the most sampled track? Find out by clicking the image below. You can sample WhoSampled for yourself by downloading the app in the App Store for the special introductory price of $2.99. What's your favorite sample-based song?
