If you've been reading Ars for a long time—particularly our Infinite Loop section—you may remember the days when we posted a weekly summary of some of the most interesting stories that we didn't cover. Those posts went away for a couple years, but we thought we'd experiment a little by bringing them back on occasion. The goal is to appreciate some of the other Apple news coverage out there on the Web, so here are a few links we collected throughout this busy week:
- As the battle for the living room heats up, Brightcove bets big on Apple TV: The Verge has a piece about Brightcove's new toolkit that allows companies to create dual-screen "apps" for iPad/iPhone and the Apple TV. The idea is to easily create apps that can stream to the Apple TV via AirPlay while using the iPhone or iPad as a remote control.
- Siri Shows Increasing Promise, But Accuracy Falls Short of Google Text Searches: MacRumors' talks about Gene Munster's analysis of Siri's accuracy compared against a regular Google text search. His findings weren't particularly great for Siri, though Munster remains optimistic about Siri's future.
- Virgin Mobile, Leap Turn to iPhone to Spur Prepaid Market: Bloomberg wrote about Virgin Mobile's plans to open its very first retail stores in Chicago in order to market its newly offered iPhone.
- BlueStacks brings Android apps to OS X, wolves planning a rest with some lambs: Engadget has the press release about a new OS X app that lets you run Android apps on the Mac. We know: your first reaction is "why on Earth!?" But Android developers might appreciate having more platform options available to them.
- Apple Inc. could bring $1 billion in economic impact to northern Nevada: KRNV Radio and News4 in Nevada covered Apple's plan to build yet another data center (in, well, Nevada). This would be in addition to the data center in North Carolina and the planned one in Oregon. According to News4, Apple hopes to begin construction in Nevada in August of this year.
- Apple Wins Patents for Inductive Charging & iOS Scrolling, Rotating & Resizing on Displays: Patently Apple once again highlights a number of interesting patents that have been awarded to Apple. The most interesting to us at Infinite Loop is the one describing the inductive charging dock, but that's largely because such feature is high on our iPhone wish lists.
We're not sure yet if there will be more of these posts, or what the frequency would be. But we're sure you have thoughts to share, so let us know in the comments what you think!
