Apple Frenemy Samsung Prepping Qualcomm-Based Windows RT Tablet, Bloomberg Says

Samsung will release a tablet featuring Microsoft’s new Windows RT software, according to a report from Bloomberg. The tablet will reportedly use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor.

Samsung is both a key partner -- and competitor -- for Apple. While Samsung builds the processors used in Apple's iPad and iPhone, Samsung's own line of tablets and smart phones are among Apple's biggest competitors.

While Qualcomm Chief Executive Paul Jacobs had promised that his company’s processors would be featured in a Windows RT tablet this year, he has declined to name the company.

“We can't say who they are yet,” Jacobs said in an interview with Forbes last month. “ I think you'll like the products when they come out.”

If Samsung is preparing a tablet, it would provide a valuable vote of confidence from a major customer after Microsoft shook up the personal computer industry with the announcement that it will build a pair of Windows tablets of its own, dubbed ‘Surface,’ last month.

An effort to counter Apple’s surging tablet business, Windows RT is built to run on smartphone processors from Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments -- rather than the traditional personal computer processors designed by Intel and AMD.
