Amoebas Attack is one of those games that I wish was around when I had the flu. Who wouldn’t want to kick some virtual virus butt while feeling miserable in bed all day. In this free game, players control an anti-body who must destroy the viruses. As players kill enemies, they collect more cells and level up so they can take on larger threats. Collecting cells eventually lets players mutate into new anti-bodies with stronger abilities and more power.

Amoebas Attack isn’t a typical dual stick shooter game. Instead of the levels becoming progressively harder, players determine the difficulty of the levels. For instance, traveling horizontally maintains the level of difficulty but traveling vertically increases or decreases difficulty. This allows gamers to play at their own pace. Thanks to the option to choose paths, the game play is packed with variation and is virtually endless.

Players must utilize fast reflexes along with the upgradable options to take on viruses. While gamers can level up, they can also level back down and lose their life by bumping into them. The smooth and responsive controls work well to help gamers take on enemies. Touching on the left side of the screen moves the amoeba while the right side lets the amoeba attack. It doesn’t matter where the fingers are placed as the controls aren’t fixed.

Along with seemingly endless levels, Amoebas Attack is also packed with boss levels to help ramp up the excitement. The bosses are huge and require ninja-like reflexes along with a special set of skills to defeat. These levels are often fun and help vary the game play, but they can also make the game frustrating at times.

After playing Amoebas Attack over the weekend, I found it hard to believe that this is a free game. Yes, there are some in-app purchase and the occasional ad. However, I could see myself shelling out a little bit of cash for this title. The graphics are by far the most impressive due to all the details. My only complaint is that it does get repetitive. While gamers can vary the difficulty and advance at their own accord, the game play just doesn’t feel any different after awhile. It needs something to keep it fresh.

Overall, Amoebas Attack is a dual stick shooter worth exploring if you’re in need of a fun freemium title or if you're a fan of this genre. It’s got enough going on for it to keep players occupied for longer than five minutes, but at the same time it can get repetitive the longer gamers play.  Regardless, this title is hard to turn down considering it’s completely free to download. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
