Cat’s Island is a 3D ball-shooting game that’s like a mix between shuffleboard and bowling. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it at first as the game looks and sounds simple on the surface, but after playing through several levels, I quickly discovered that it does require some strategy to master it. While it’s a fun casual game for players of all ages, it’s far from prrrfection.

Cat’s Island comes with three island environments that each contain 12 levels, with more promised in a future update. The goal of each level is to shoot the orange kitties at the enemies to send them flying into oblivion. In order to do this, players must flick their finger through a fur ball into the direction of the enemy. After a kitty is flicked, one of the evil enemy cats will then attack and try to knock off one of your cats. Players are able to rotate the island to get a new vantage point, which is helpful for those tight spots they may get themselves into.

Players must work hard to knock all the enemies off the island in order to advance to the next level. After all the evil cats are gone, fish rains from the sky and gamers have the opportunity to tap on as many of them as possible to earn a higher score. The levels do become increasingly more challenging as players advance due to objects placed on the island like rocks, blocks and fungi. Thankfully, the developers included power-ups to keep the game play fresh. For instance, flinging one of your cats into a power-up can turn him into a mega-kitty or cause lightning to come down and strike one of the enemies off the board.

The controls for Cat’s Island are one of its biggest issues. Players are able to rotate the island to get different vantage points, but it’s still difficult to fling a cat in the right direction. There’s no trajectory arrow and no power meter to determine how strong and how far a cat will fly and there’s no way to really tell if it’s going in the right direction. However, I did find that the game was a lot easier to play on the iPad’s larger screen because I could see more. The other issue is that there’s no Game Center achievements or leaderboards so it lacks in the competitive department.

I loved the concept of Cat's Island and the graphics are well-designed. If it wasn’t for the controls, I would have had a hard time putting it down. If you’re going to check this title out, I’d recommend playing it on the iPad as I seemed to have better aim on it. It’s a fun pick-up-and-play title that just needs a little work to make it more enjoyable.
