Zombies, giant sea monsters, prisoners of war, mechs, submarines, tanks, giant insects, and even elephants to ride. There isn't a game out there that can claim to pack all these things into one cohesive experience. That is, except for Metal Slug 3. This retro side scrolling shooter is an iOS port of the unique and quirky action game made popular on the NeoGeo and in arcades all over the world. The game has been fitted with touch controls and formatted for iOS devices so that now players can relive the chaotic action on their iPhone or iPad or experience it for the first time.

When players play this game, it's clear to see why the Metal Slug series has become so popular over the years. The art is top notch with hundreds of different character and enemy animations and so many little flourishes that players will find something new every time they play. The enemies and environments are so varied that each level sometimes feels like a completely different game. Still the solid gameplay remains constant and the shooting is fun and accessible. With lots of enemy types, tons of weapon power ups, and lots of vehicles (or Slugs) to take control of, this game has tons to keep players happy.

As shooters go, this game is not the easiest. However, this version includes several different difficulty levels and even a mission select mode where players can choose to start on whatever mission they want instead of having to play through from the beginning. This way, even the most inexperienced shooter players can see as much of the game as they want. Multiplayer co-op was a huge part of what made Metal Slug 3 fun originally and this iOS version is no different. A multiplayer mode allows players to sync up via bluetooth with another player and play the game together that way.

As is usually the case of console or arcade titles ported to the iOS platform, the touch controls for Metal Slug 3 are not perfect. The virtual joystick and buttons can be a bit unresponsive and sluggish at times, but they work well enough to allow players to enjoy the game. They won't likely allow for the fine control needed to enjoy high-level play, but they are enough to enjoy the experience on a more casual level. Even if the controls aren't perfect, this game is a classic for a reason and both players familiar with the title and those new to it will find things to enjoy.
