Another Friday, another pundit leaving Apple! If we had more pundits who’d self-importantly leave Apple then we’d have fewer pundits who’d self-importantly leave Apple.
This week’s contestant is Charles Wright, who tells us “Why I abandoned the iPhone” for the Samsung Galaxy S III.
Among our reasons for the switch was the fact that in recent years we have become disillusioned with Apple.
Yes, that is the royal “we” Wright is using. Dude, get over yourself. Even this mythical beast only uses the third person.
But Apple is horrible! Just terrible! Walled gardens! High prices! Executives parking in spaces clearly marked for disabled people!
Google, meanwhile, has never done anything questionable ever, ever, ever, THE END.
We’re left to assume that that’s what these people think, because their defense only ever talks about Apple’s moral shortcomings. The Macalope could link to a mess of pieces about the crap that Google’s done, but if he does that then he’s just rewarding Wright’s laziness. Give a man a fish, etc., etc.
Look, Charles, the Macalope’s not cheesed you moved platforms. He really doesn’t care. You sound like you have your reasons, although they aren’t all completely accurate.
Perhaps our biggest concern, though, has been a recent, noticeable decline in its software standards. In March we wrote about the iCloud fiasco that temporarily emptied our contacts list.
You obviously never used MobileMe. Unfortunately, your problem with iCloud doesn’t point to a decline so much as a continuation of Apple’s bad history with online syncing. Still, you got burned and that’s never any fun.
Some of these other complaints, though …
Another irritation is Apple’s tendency to make unilateral decisions that hamstring users, ranging from its stand against Flash…
Again with the one-sided arguments. One man’s stand against Flash is another man’s stand for battery life, stability and security.
…to making it difficult, if not impossible, for the user to replace a battery.
[eye roll]
OK, fine. Personally, the Macalope has always been ready to upgrade well before his iPhone’s battery has come close to giving up the ghost, but if you want to hang onto devices longer, that might be an argument. Again, there are compromises that come with that that Wright doesn’t discuss.
But, in the end, a superior product persuaded us to make the shift. Samsung’s Galaxy S III is dramatically better than the iPhone 4S and is almost certainly going to give the iPhone 5 a run for its money.
“Almost certainly.” About a device you haven’t seen. That’s some magical prognosticating, there, Kreskin.
The S III’s 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display and 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor, “zero shutter lag” eight-megapixel camera, expandable microSD memory and user-replaceable battery is an irresistible combination.
For you.
Pundits, when you write self-important pieces try to make sure that you’re clear that they’re self-important. Because your personal experience is not necessarily applicable to everyone.
[Editors’ Note: In addition to being a mythical beast, the Macalope is not an employee of Macworld. As a result, the Macalope is always free to criticize any media organization. Even ours.]
