It’s hard not to compare a game to Angry Birds when it looks and feels so similar to the popular best-selling game. Worm vs Birds gave me that impression when I read the iTunes description and opened the game for the first time. While the two games do have some similarities, Worm vs Birds sets itself apart by adding twists that make the game not only addicting but also a pleasure to play.

Instead of shooting down pigs and destroying everything else in sight, Worm vs Birds is a physics based shooter puzzler with one goal in mind: take out those pesky birds with an arsenal of worms. In fact, there is such a huge variety of worms available that it’s nearly impossible to grow tired of this game too quickly because each worm as its own special ability.

At the start of each level, a worm from the bottom of the screen jumps into the cannon. Players can see the order of worms that they must use but they cannot rearrange them. Touching the cannon an pulling back shows its trajectory. When players let go of the screen, the madness of the game kicks into gear. The worms not only send the avian to birdie heaven, but they continue to bounce off everything on the screen until they disappear completely.

What makes the game so difficult is that every level can be completed in just one shot, but finding it can often be frustrating. Along with trying to get the perfect shot there are two different game modes, 60 challenging levels and four unlockable stages, which means the replay value for this game is marginally high.

Worm vs Birds is packed with even more variety to keep gamers occupied for hours. There’s nighttime stages where gamers must toggle a light to find hidden birds, portals that send worms to different parts of a level, hidden pirate birds that unlock power-ups and a few other odds and ends that make it hard to put the game down.

I was completely surprised when I played Worm vs Birds because it exceeded my expectations. More serious gamers and those who aren’t fans of the Angry Birds style of games may not find this title as enjoyable, but a casual game fanatic like myself will definitely enjoy this title.

From the adorable and comical graphics to the addicting and simple game play, Worm vs Birds is a physics puzzler that I highly recommend for everyone ranging from casual gamers and puzzle fanatics to children and families. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it’s just a lot of fun to play. If you check it out today, be sure to clear your schedule because you won’t be able to stop playing.
