London 2012 Results app review

The official Olympics app does everything you want, and looks neat too says Matt Warman

Free; Android, iOS and BlackBerry

Now that Team GB has started winning gold medals, it’s worth downloading the London 2012 official results app. Where anything with such a title could be very functional, in fact this version, on Android and iOS in particular, has some pleasant surprises. Used in conjunction with the BBC Olympics app, which permits live streaming, it’s all you need for a mobile Games.

The app is divided into Live, Schedule and Results, Sports, Medals and Athletes categories, as well as a section called My Games where users can define which country they want as their home nation.

Many of these categories are different ways of showing the same information, but for real Games fans, destinations such as Live, in particular, provide a wealth of information that seems to be available here before it’s on most blogs or other news sources.

News aggregation, too, is useful and effective, and looks even better on tablets rather than phones.

Intriguingly, user reviews suggest that many are putting up with adverts simply because the app is by far the best for the Games – but putting them in at all is a surprising decision. Many also point out that the ability to provide more tailored filtering would improve the app; while this is true, the amount of raw data and filtering available here already still makes it must for at least the next ten days, and then for the Paralympics too.
