Shellrazer is a 2D side-scrolling shooter game that places gamers on top of a giant war turtle. The goal is to take out all the goblins on each level in an effort to make it to the pole at the end. Gamers must make it through 50 levels across Goblin Kingdoms. The game is overwhelmingly fun and has become one of my favorites so far this year.

The war turtle can handle up to three steam-punk style cannons mounted on top of his shell known as champions. There are 12 unique champions in the game and each of them have eight specialized upgrades. Champions are unlocked as players progress in the game.

It’s up to gamers to figure out which champions to use before the start of each level. Along with upgrades, gamers can customize their champions with over 30 different items that range from protective shields and new ammo to healing bandages. Players can also equip their war turtle with four power-ups that are placed at the bottom of the screen to aid their champions during battle.

Upgrades and power-ups are purchased in the store with coins that players earn. There are IAPs in this game but they are not necessary to purchase. They are only available for those who don’t have the patience to earn coins. Players earn coins in the game and also at the end once a level is completed.

The controls are a little frustrating at first but they work great with this game. Gamers are in full control of the weapons and they can also control how fast the war turtle moves forward. The multitouch controls make it possible to use both hands, one for aiming and one for tapping, but you’ll want to disable multitasking gestures in the Settings menu on the iOS device if the game starts acting funny. It’s not necessary to use both hands but it can help in the more difficult levels.

The game play in Shellrazer is hectic as the action never stops. Those who feel like the game is too easy or slow can turn up the difficulty level to the medium or hard setting for more hours of playtime. Along with the intense gameplay, the crisp and retina display ready graphics combined with the sound effects and music make the game even more bad-ass. My only complaint is that it’s harder to see all the enemies and the small text on the iPhone’s screen. I enjoyed playing it a lot more on my iPad.

The RPG elements, awesome graphics and addicting game play are what stood out the most for me in this game. There’s plenty of content to keep players occupied for hours and three game save slots along with iCloud syncing means that the whole family can get in on the action. If you’re looking for a new pick-up-and-play title, I highly recommend purchasing Shellrazer today.
