Gears & Guts Review

Finding a good zombie shoot-em'-up has become increasingly difficult as the genre gains popularity, and so when I heard that Glu had developed a zombie app I was very interested to try it out. But does it stand out from its fierce competitors such as Dead Trigger and Zombie Highway? Read on to find out!

In Gears & Guts, players find themselves thrown straight into the action. The basic premise of the game is as follows: the town has being taken over by zombies - and it's up to gamers and their car to claim it back, one zombie corpse at a time! Players do this by using their car's in-built turret, or by running the zombies over. This is where the second term of the title comes into play, because trust me - there is more than enough to satisfy any craving for zombie violence! It also allows a choice between two different types of controls (touch or tilt), something players are sure to appreciate. Players can also equip their vehicle with whatever weapons they pick up. This adds a nice touch of customization to the game.

The game itself is a freemium title, and I find that Glu has actually done a good job of implementing this often incorrectly implemented model. The game itself is not directly hindered if players choose not to avail themselves of the in-app purchases - a major plus.

When players begin to pick up speed in this game, they may find the game experiencing a small bit of lag, which could be due to the fact that there is lots to be rendered because of how fast things are moving. The touch controls in this game can also be a bit odd at times. Players may find that sometimes the left arrow gives them a small nudge to the left, whereas other times it would be much more powerful.

That Gears & Guts is a freemium game shouldn't deter would-be players. It's perfectly playable without purchasing anything. Although I did experience significant lag at certain times, the fun and quirky gameplay made up for it. Players will enjoy customizing their vehicles, running over zombies and shooting them to smithereens.
