Apple on Thursday unveiled its annual back-to-school discount, offering students a $100 gift card to spend on apps.

Students who purchase a qualifying Mac through Sept. 21 can receive a $100 gift card that can be used to buy apps, books, music, or movies in the Mac App store, iTunes Store, the iBookstore, and the App Store, Apple said in a note on its website. Those who purchase a new iPad, meanwhile, can get a $50 gift card.

To qualify for the offer, you must be a college student, or student accepted to a college, a parent buying for a college student, or a faculty or staff member from any grade-level school, Apple said. Apple has posted a FAQ sheet with more information about the deal and how to obtain the gift card.

College students can also get a discount on a number of Macs thanks to Apple education pricing. For students, the MacBook Air is discounted $50 to $949 while the MacBook Pro starts at $1,099, a $100 savings. If you're eyeing a desktop, the iMac is available starting at $1,190, a $50 savings while the Mac Pro is priced from $2,299, a $200 savings.

Meanwhile, anyone can now get a discount on the new iPad if you're willing to . Apple this week began offering its new iPad with Retina display, released this March, in the refurbished section of its online Apple Store. By opting for a refurbished model, you can save $50 off the price of any third-generation iPad.

Apple $100 software gift cards last year; previously, Cupertino gave away free iPod touches with a Mac purchase.
