MazzyBoyHD is a 3D labyrinth game where players must conquer all the levels in the allotted time all while avoiding obstacles and collecting keys along the way. While I loved the concept, it needs some work to make the gameplay more enjoyable.

There are various stages packed with different mazes that increase in difficulty. At the start of each level, players are shown a quick overview of the maze that points out all the checkpoints and the exit. They are then shown the number of keys required to complete each level.

While it’s not clear why the stickman must make it through all these mazes, it’s certain that gamers must be quick on their toes. Players navigate the backwards hat wearing fellow with the virtual joystick on the right side of the screen. There are two camera views (although I’d like to see more) that are controlled by tapping on the camera on the left for those who need a better angle.

What I enjoyed about this game the most are the elaborate mazes. I felt like a lab rat trying to find my way to the cheese at the end. Not only are there keys to collect, but there are objects to avoid like spikes and swinging pendulums. Rushing through those checkpoints helped calm my nerves because they add more time to the clock, but then it was time to panic again not only to find the keys but to make my way successfully to the exit.

Although I initially had fun navigating through the mazes, I eventually started to get more and more frustrated. The game lacks in a few different departments, with the biggest being the controls. Controls are often one of the main issues in games like this one. They didn’t quite feel accurate enough for me. I constantly ran into walls and it was difficult to make those sharp turns while racing against the clock. There’s no way to adjust the controls nor are there other control options.

There was another issue that disrupts the gameplay, and it occurs when players approach the obstacles. For some reason the camera view is changed to top-down, which I don’t mind, but it takes a few seconds for this to occur. The game seems to come to a stop just so the camera angle can change.

MazzyBoyHD has so much potential to become a great game, but it needs some work to get there. Players looking for a game to kill some time and those who are big fans of labyrinth style games may want to give this one a try. It’s definitely not a game that I can recommend to everyone, but it’s worth giving it a shot since this iPad game costs less than one dollar.
