After almost three months of work, the developers of the open source graphics editor package GIMP have released the first point update of the 2.8 series. GIMP 2.8.2 (version 2.8.1 only had beta status and was never officially released) fixes problems with the program's user interface and with the underlying libraries.

The developers have fixed several issues with GIMP's user interface and the underlying libgimp library under Mac OS X, and the release announcement on the GIMP web site promises an official GIMP.app to "be available soon". Menu items that explicitly specify use of the new Generic Graphics Library (GEGL) have been removed as GIMP is slowly being ported to use GEGL for all its functions and the developers feel that making this option explicitly available adds no value for the users. The JPEG plugin now remembers loading and saving defaults again.

The NEWS file for the release provides a complete list of changes. GIMP 2.8.2 is available as source code, in binary form for several Linux distributions and also for Windows. GIMP is licensed under the GPLv3, with some exceptions and with some libraries being licensed under the LGPL.
