The on-again, off-again version of Tweetbot for the Mac is on again—though in a limited beta form.
Over the weekend, Tweetbot maker Tapbots announced via blog post that it had released a beta of its Twitter client for the Mac. But there’s a catch: The current Tweetbot for Mac beta won’t let you add or reauthorize any accounts. In other words, the new version essentially works for people who were already running the Tweetbot for Mac alpha, but not for new users.
“If you try to add a new account or launch the app with no accounts created you are going to end up right here on this page,” Tapbots’ Paul Haddad writes in the blog post announcing the beta.
The release of the Tweetbot beta comes just a few days after Tapbots pulled the download link for the alpha version of its Twitter client. The developer made the move in the wake of API changes by Twitter that put a cap on the total number of users third-party clients like Tweetbot are allowed to support.
Among the highlights in Tweetbot for Mac 0.8.0 are a multitude of bug fixes. You can now paste images into the new tweet window again and copy tweets on your timeline. The beta promises improvements to multi-column swiping and keyboard support as well as the ability to drag-and-drop tweets.
