iPhone 5 Compatible With Old Accessories ... For A Price

This article is more than 10 years old.

As expected, Apple has abandoned the aging 30-pin dock connector and replaced it with a smaller, modern connector called Lightning. While this new connector is not compatible with existing hardware, Apple will sell you an adapter -- but the price will make your eyes water.

Here's the adapter:

It's a small bit of plastic and a few metal bits, which can be yours for the insane price of $29!

If you want this adapter as part of a cable -- a small 0.2 m cable -- then the price goes up to a stratospheric $39!

The prices of these adapters seem extra crazy when compared to a 5W USB power adapter, which sells for a reasonable $19, or the new Apple EarPods, which are only $29.

Apple knows that there are a lot of people out there who have invested a lot of money in iPhone accessories, and knows it can ask what it wants for the adapters because it's cheaper than buying new accessories.
