Topic No. 1 on the GeekWire radio show and podcast this week is — what else? — the iPhone 5. We discuss the specs, the changes from the iPhone 4S, the implications of the new Lightning connector, and other details in advance of the launch.

Despite a somewhat mixed response from tech enthusiasts, preorders are selling quickly, and we’re expecting to see the obligatory lines when the iPhone 5 hits stores next week.

Should you buy one? It depends on your situation, but for people upgrading from feature phones or the iPhone 3GS, etc., it’s certainly worth looking at the iPhone 4 (now $0 with a 2-year contract) or iPhone 4S ($99 with contract) instead.

Meanwhile, Microsoft made headlines this week with a huge giveaway for its employees, announcing at an internal meeting that every one of them will be getting a new Surface RT tablet, plus a Windows Phone 8 and a new work PC based on Windows 8.

Our story breaking this news went completely viral, and sparked a debate among Amazon and Microsoft loyalists about the relative merits of their respective companies.

Box CEO Aaron Levie

After the news segment, we’re joined via phone by Box CEO Aaron Levie, the guy from Mercer Island who has gone on to lead one of the fastest-rising companies in Silicon Valley at 27 years old.

Levie is our keynoter at GeekWire’s upcoming Seattle 2.0 Startup Day, a week from today in Bellevue, and we get a bit of a preview as we talk with him about his upbringing in the Seattle region, his Twitter habit, Facebook, his views on the Silicon Valley scene and more.

Our App of the Week is Familiar for iPhone and Android, a great service for sharing photos with friends and family members.

Also listen for our Name that Tech Tune contest for a chance to win tickets to Startup Day.
