Apple's New 'EarPods' A Better Choice For Gym Goers

This article is more than 10 years old.

After three years of research and development, Apple finally improves the earphones it ships with the iPhone and iPods.

I don't know how many Apple earphones -- the type with the remote for controlling volume and changing tracks -- I've wrecked in the gym. The problem always seems to be that the remote unit first becomes intermittent, then starts to randomly change tracks, then finally dies completely. It's annoying and expensive. Well, according to repair experts iFixit, Apple has dramatically improved on the design.

First, there are larger cable wrappings near the remote, which reduces the strain on the wires. This reduces the chances of damaging your earphones when you tug on them of they catch on a piece of gym equipment.

The second improvement is that Apple has added better sealing to the internals of the remote to help keep out unwanted -- and corrosive -- sweat. While time will tell how much better this will be in the long run, it's good to see that the Cupertino giant has finally acknowledged that the old design was flawed and done something to try to correct it.

If you want to buy these EarPods separately to an iPhone or iPod, they will set you back $29 (plus any tax).
