Does your device support the upgrade to Apple iOS 6?

Share

Apple is releasing iOS 6 later Wednesday, with several changes to the mobile operating system.

But is your device up to date enough to use it?

Here are the devices that will be able to download iOS 6, including notes on which features of the operating system they can support.

If you were one of the early adopters of the iPad and haven’t updated to a newer version, you’re out of luck -- Apple says the first-generation iPad will not be making the jump to iOS 6. If you have an iPad 2, you’ll be a able to download the new operating system but won’t be able to use Siri voice commands. Only owners of the third-generation iPad will be able to fully use iOS 6.

iPhone

Apple is no longer selling the iPhone 3GS from 2009, but surprisingly, it will be able to use iOS 6. More recent iPhones will also be supported, too, and the iPhone 5, of course, will come with iOS 6 pre-installed.

As for Siri, that’s still only available for the 4S and 5 iPhone models, as are the new cellular FaceTime calls and Panorama picture mode features. Apple also says the new Offline Reading List feature is not supported on the 3GS.

iPod Touch

If you bought your iPod Touch before September 2010 you won’t be able to download the new operating system. Apple says that only the fourth-generation iPod Touch and the new generation coming out next month will receive iOS 6. Siri and Panorama photos will only be supported on the fifth generation.
