Recess Riot Review

Elementary school was full of good times from what I can remember. Such a simple life filled with playing games with no worries in the world. Recess was always a highlight of the day and is the part of the day of an elementary student that Recess Riot aims to recreate.

Recess Riot is brought to us from the creators of Super Mega Worm. Like Super Mega Worm, Recess Riot is designed in retro, 8-bit artwork that makes me remember simpler gaming times. There are two different game modes within the game: jump and dodge. Players control the character left and right using an on-screen directional pad and using two buttons that make the character perform certain actions. In jump mode, the character is playing jump rope and needs to jump over the rope without getting hit. In dodge mode, objects are being hurled at the character and they need to either dodge the objects entirely or hit them back. There are three difficulties within each game mode to add a bit more challenge to otherwise simple tasks. For example, in the expert level in jump mode, not only must the character jump over the rope, but they also need to dodge and knock objects away at the same time. The character can be customized with different shirts, hats and other things to give each a unique look.

The retro graphics are very well done and the game has an overall classic feel to it. Both game modes are simple to play with the basic control layout. I did however notice that the buttons were sometimes unresponsive to my touches. This may be because the buttons are a little small or it may be due to some user error. Either way, I think the buttons could be a little bigger to avoid this issue altogether.

Recess Riot has a lot of good attributes. It can be repetitive at times and I personally don't think it will be a game that keeps players constantly coming back for more. Having said that, I do think the price of $0.99 is fair and the game is a nice addition to the retro-themed genre. The developers promise more game modes in future updates, so there is potential that it could see more variety and flare in time.
