Mountain Lion’s Finder: Problems with ‘More Info’ in inspector window

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) had problems with the “Preview” column in column view in the Finder. I wrote a blog post about it at the time. The problems were never addressed by Apple in Lion as far as I know.

Now in Mountain Lion (10.8), the problems that affected the “Preview” column appear to have been addressed. Now, when I am in a Finder window in column view and I select an image file, Mountain Lion consistently displays the correct image dimensions in the “Preview” column. However, Mountain Lion also appears to have introduced a new bug, this time in the “More Info…” section of the inspector window.

Here’s a short screen capture illustrating the problem:

As you can see, after displaying “Fetching…” for a little while (the delay is much shorter when I am not running the screen capture tool), the Finder simply fails to fetch whatever it was fetching and displays “” instead. This is a problem with PDF files (as in the screen capture above), but also with picture files, etc.

The Finder has no problem displaying this additional information in the preview column, but for some reason it fails to display it in the inspector window. It also has no problem displaying the same information under “More Info” in the “Get Info” dialog box (as opposed to the inspector). So I think it’s quite clearly a bug.

Fortunately for me, I don’t use the inspector very much. But for those who rely on it, it must be a significant annoyance.
