iOS 6 Users Experiencing Wi-Fi Connectivity Problems On iPhone 4S, New iPad

Struggling to turn this on? You're not the only one.

It seems Apple’s new Maps app isn’t the only thing frustrating iOS 6 users right now. A 91-page thread on Apple’s Support Communities forum is full of users who are also complaining about Wi-Fi connectivity issues, which are said to be plaguing the iPhone 4S and the new iPad after upgrading. It’s not just that Wi-Fi performance is poor; some users can’t enable it at all.

Many are reporting that after upgrading their iOS devices — namely the iPhone 4S and the new iPad — to iOS 6, Wi-Fi is disabled, and the open to enable it is “greyed out” within the Settings app. This leaves them stuck with a cellular data connection only. Others are able to turn Wi-Fi on, but when they do, it won’t connect to their network.

The issue is also affecting Bluetooth connectivity for some users, too, preventing them from pairing their iPhone or iPad with other devices.

It’s unclear at this point whether the two problems are related, or how widespread they might be. The thread has more than 800 replies at the time of writing this post, which seems like a lot, but it’s a very small number when you consider how many users have already upgraded to iOS 6.

However, at least two forum members have claimed that Apple is aware of the issue. So it could be that the company issues its first iOS 6 software update earlier than anticipated to quash the bug. Until then, a number of workarounds have been suggested.

You could try hard resetting your device, then attempting to activate Wi-Fi again when it starts up. Or you can try restoring your device and running a fresh install of iOS 6. Alternatively, some users are reporting that changing the HTTP Proxy to ‘Auto’ in Network Settings seems to work for those who can activate Wi-Fi, but cannot connect to a network.

Some users have also suggested the only real fix at this point is to downgrade to iOS 5.1 (but that’s something Apple doesn’t advise), while others claim to have gotten new hardware from Apple after demonstrating the issue at a Genius Bar.

If you’ve discovered your own workaround for this issue, let us know about it in the comments.
