Former MobileMe subscribers getting free 20GB iCloud storage until 2050

Is it a glitch? Or is Apple just being nice?

Former MobileMe subscribers getting free 20GB iCloud storage until 2050

Apple appears to be extending the free extra 20GB of iCloud storage for former MobileMe subscribers from now until 2050. The 20GB normally costs $40 per year, but Apple had previously offered paid MobileMe users the extra space for free until September 30 in order to encourage users to switch. Instead of expiring Sunday night, however, users noticed that Apple appears to have extended the deadline for another 38 years, according to TUAW.

Ars was able to confirm the change this morning. Look in Settings > iCloud > Account on your iOS device, and you'll see your current storage plan. My iPhone shows that I still have the 20GB of extra storage, which ostensibly should have expired at midnight last night. It now doesn't expire until "9/30/50."

We reached out to Apple this morning to find out if the extended storage deadline is a glitch or a permanent extension of the free storage space, but we didn't receive a response as of publication time. We noted last week that the free 5GB of storage for iCloud users isn't enough to back up more than one iOS device, which effectively means that Apple's most loyal customers end up paying extra for the privilege of using iCloud to back up and sync multiple devices.
