TapFX is an easy to use and clear photo filter app, but it's a little too similar to its predecessor WowFX.

Regular photo filter app users might feel a little cheated by TapFX, understandably so. The app, from the makers of WowFX, bears a huge resemblance to the earlier title. The layout of the app is identical with only one crucial difference: the filters available. Is it worth buying? That's a complex issue.

For users who haven't tried out WowFX, TapFX is quite attractive. It offers a clean layout that makes it easy to add effects to photos, especially when in a rush. It's the kind of interface that's clearly been designed with fast snappers such as Instagram users in mind. There's no need to take ages to set things up, just quickly tap on the screen and add the relevant effects. These effects are quite quirky with a mixture of stars and comets, alongside frogs and Space Invaders style effects. They can make a mundane photo look quite intriguing, when used well. Photo wide filters can be applied afterwards, although they don't alter the effects already added.

Opacity and size options are also available, but they are a little restrictive with it only possible to reduce opacity rather than increase. Layering is also possible, adding to the functionality that can be garnered through using TapFX.

So what's the problem? For those who have already bought WowFX, it's tough to recommend TapFX, at least at its full price. The interface is identical so the only reason to buy TapFX is to have more effects to try out. These effects aren't quite as spectacular as WowFX's but they do serve a purpose. At its full price of $1.99, however, TapFX feels a trifle expensive. At $0.99, either as a full app or in-app purchase, it should gain some fans but any more, and it's much harder to recommend over the superior WowFX.
