Apple notified its former MobileMe customers on Friday that it was extending a complimentary storage upgrade for one more year. Originally set to expire on September 30th, 2012, Apple is extending the upgrade to September 30th, 2013.
iCloud is a free service that comes with 5GB of online storage. Customers who migrated their MobileMe accounts to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st, 2012 were given a limited-time, free upgrade to help with the transition. Those upgrades were based on how much space you had with MobileMe, and could be either 10GB, 20GB, or 50GB.
According to a KnowledgeBase article created to explain this extension, "If you are a former MobileMe member and had access to more than 5GB of MobileMe storage when you moved your account to iCloud, then you received a complimentary iCloud storage upgrade automatically. That upgrade has now been extended, free of charge."
The extension gives users another year to not pay attention to how much iCloud storage they have, but if you want to know how much storage you have with iCloud, you can use the following methods to check:
- On an iOS device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Account.
- On a Mac: Go to System Preferences > iCloud, then click Manage followed by View Account.
- On a PC: Open the iCloud Control Panel for Windows, then click Manage followed by View Account.

When you moved your MobileMe account to iCloud, we provided you with a complimentary storage upgrade beyond the standard 5GB that comes with an iCloud account to help you with the transition. Originally, this storage upgrade was set to expire on September 30, 2012.
