For Those Ready To Trade In iPad For A New iPad Mini, It's A Seller's Market

This article is more than 10 years old.

Apple iPad users, interested in trading in their current tablet for the smaller-screen version CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil next week, may be able to net enough to cover most of the cost of the new device.

According to consumer electronics resale site Glyde.com, not many iPad owners have put up their tablet for sale since Apple sent out an invitation yesterday to a special event on Oct. 23 where the long-rumored iPad mini, with a 7.85-inch screen is expected to debut. Glyde.com expects that to change, based on re-sales after Apple introduced the third-generation iPad in March. “We saw iPad 2 sales were up 70 percent from the day before the announcement and 55 percent more listings of iPads were made after the announcement than in the previous 24 hours,” Glyde.com said.

What to expect in the new iPad mini? Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray believes it will have a  7-to-8-inch, non-Retina display, 8 gigabytes of storage and support for WiFi networks. Apple will probably offer multiple versions of the device with more storage, just as it does with the regular iPad. He expect it to go on sale around Nov. 2.

As for pricing? Munster believes it will start at $249 to $299, putting it in competition with Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD. Both of those 7-inch tablets are priced starting at $199. Here’s his thinking on Apple's pricing.

“Some investors do not believe that the smaller iPad will be priced below $300. As evidence, we point to the base level 5th generation iPod Touch, which is $299 at its base level with 32GB in storage and a 4-inch Retina display.

We believe that if Apple were to forego the Retina display and reduce storage to 8GB at the base level, the company should be able to deliver a device in the $249-299 range. We would assume that the smaller iPad line would carry an average selling price of $350-$360, which would be about a 20% price increase from the base (assuming $299 base), which would be in-line with the increase on the base full-size iPad price."

What’s your iPad 1, iPad 2 or iPad 3 worth? Glyde.com’s estimates are below. Remember, a new 16-gigabyte iPad 2 with WiFi is $399, while a 16-gig with 3G is $529. As for the third-generation iPad, the WiFi versions sell for $499 (16-gig), $599 (32-gig) and $699 (64-gig). Add $130 to those prices for an iPad 3 with cellular  network access.
