Blendamaze Review

Blendamaze is a very traditional game. It's the kind of game that would work nearly as well with a wooden board game, as it would on an iOS device. Managing to be both challenging and educational, it's a fun departure from more modern titles, although players may well find themselves a little frustrated at times.

The idea is simple enough, the kind of thing I've experienced in Christmas cracker type games. Players have to roll a ball into a hole placed within the level. This is done through tilting the iOS device appropriately. It takes some practice to master even this minor skill, given that the game is very responsive to interactions. As the instructions explain, less is more and some fine tweaks are essential to success. Further challenge comes from the colors required throughout each level. The ball has to be rolled over color palettes in order to turn into the correct color for the hole. Early stages simply require rolling over one type of color while later stages involve blending colors in the right order, as the name of the game suggests.

This is where things get much harder. Gold stars are awarded for getting the color spot on while silver and bronze are awarded for lesser shades. Once the ball has been changed to the right color, it's important to avoid slipping into a different color. This process makes it all the more challenging to complete a level, even more so with no undo or step back button given the lively nature of the game.

It's challenging stuff and players would be forgiven for being infuriated at times. One slightly wrong tilt can undo a lot of work in later stages and it's sometimes quite tough to navigate the mazes that emerge to add to the difficulty level. It is rewarding to succeed, however, and while I wouldn't recommend playing Blendamaze on a commute or anywhere that could affect a steady pair of hands, there's fun to be had in this simple yet fiendish title.
