Microsoft has removed Facebook and Twitter apps from Xbox 360 as part of its mandatory dashboard upgrade ahead of global roll out Oct.23.

Apparently, the move is aimed at increasing Internet Explorer 9 usage on the console. The web browser is being added to Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of the Fall Update.

A company representative stated that the social networking apps are being "retired" as part of a "streaming" strategy, IGN has reported.

Facebook and Twitter arrived on Xbox 360 three years ago, when gamers logged in to post a status update, IGN has added.

Microsoft has not made any statement on whether the pair of apps will ever make a comeback.
