Punch Quest is a game that when it was announced, had such promise: a game of endless punching from Rocketcat Games and Madgarden, known for its work on Sword of Fargoal and Glitch Machine? I was excited.

This game absolutely does not disappoint, and is the clubhouse leader for the best iOS game of 2012.

This is essentially at its heart a hybrid of an endless runner game like Jetpack Joyride with the brawling of an old-school beat ’em up like Final Fight or Streets of Rage, though it feels like little else that's really come before. Players control a burly man or woman (who is also burly, in a refreshing change) as they run through a dungeon of some sorts, beating up all who oppose them, until they themselves are beaten up. Along the way, there’s multiple enemy variations to punch, bosses to punch many times, and even treasure to collect. By punching it, of course.

While the obvious comparison is to God of Blades, a similar auto-running combat game, Punch Quest succeeds by having deeper and more fluid combat. All the moves feel like they’re more than just pre-packaged events caused by player interactions, as each action feels like it flows naturally from the previous one. The game gets frantic, but it always feels like the player is in control, not restricted by the action at all. This is all done with only a forward punch and uppercut button available, and the combat still feels deep. The different abilities allow for players to approach the game with their own style as well, like focusing on defensive or offensive stactics.

Punch Quest has the kind of humor and personality that Rocketcat has been known for. Yes, there are gnomes here, from all around the menu, to even a section where the player controls a giant gnome through a bee temple. But nothing may be as great as riding a laser-firing dinosaur. Nothing. Even just the enemy reactions, and watching them get knocked out, or hit by skulls, is full of a sense of whimsy. This game is just entertaining.

Also, the fact that this game is free-to-play is an absolute steal for players. The game can be played for hours and hours on end, unlocking abilities at a steady pace, without paying a single cent. It’s free-to-have-fun. Where the money will be dropped in large amounts is in trying to get hats and ultra hats. And oh, are there hats. But for those that want to just play the game, it’s there to play, but who wouldn’t want to buy some awesome hats?

There’s really nothing to complain about with Punch Quest. Everything about it has come together in a way that is absolutely flawless. This is an absolute must-have. There is no reason not to download it whatsoever.
