Revised Apple statement on iPad “copying” appears in UK papers

Revised statement leaves out comments that irritated UK judge.

Revised Apple statement on iPad

One day after a UK judge ordered Apple to rewrite a statement saying Samsung did not copy the iPad, new ads have begun showing up in UK newspapers. A photo of Apple's ad in The Guardian newspaper was first posted by @simonwells on Twitter, showing a shortened version of what Apple had previously posted on its site.

Unlike the previous statement (which has since been taken down from Apple's UK website), the one in the newspaper doesn't include comments from High Court Judge Colin Birss, calling Samsung's designs "not as cool" as Apple's. Nor does it point out Apple's wins against Samsung in the US and other countries, which is what got Apple in trouble with the UK Court of Appeals on Thursday this week. Apple was previously ordered to make UK customers aware of Samsung's lack of patent infringement in that country, but because Apple tacked on extra commentary about patent infringement elsewhere, Judge Robin Jacob declared in a hearing in London that Apple's statement was "a plain breach of the order."

The newspaper ad is just a short one paragraph that "links" people to the High Court's judgment online. It says Samsung's Galaxy Tabs "do not infringe Apple's Community registered design," and that "there is no injunction in respect of the Community registered design in force anywhere in Europe."
