Sony's iOS Reader app hits iTunes - TWO YEARS LATE

ePub viewer finally tweaked to meet Apple's Ts&Cs

In January 2011, Apple rejected Sony’s Reader app for iDevices. Sony today revealed the software is back on the cards.

A “media alert” from Sony US was issued at lunchtime today headed, “Sony Reader Store Introduces Reader for iOS.”

Unfortunately, the alert links to an empty HTML page, as does the headline that appears on Sony’s US website.

However, a search on the US iTunes App Store reveals the app, which rejoices in the pithy title Reader - eBooks from Sony. It's not yet present in the UK App Store.

Sony’s original effort, announced in November 2010 and due for release in December of that year, failed to win the approval of Apple’s testers thanks to its incorporation of the Japanese giant’s online bookshop. Such an inclusion runs contrary to the Cupertino company’s Ts&Cs.

When the app was rejected, in January 2011, Sony implied it may not tweak the software in order to avoid rejection. And the code’s absence over the years suggested it was unwilling to do so.

But here, at long last it is, on both the iPad and iPhone. It’s free, of course - and now you simply log in to your Reader Store account to download books you’ve bought outside of Apple’s ecosystem.

The good news for iDevice owners: you now have a further alternative to Apple and Amazon. ®
