Deep War is a fun for five minutes shoot em up, but one that lacks much, well, depth.

Deep War feels reminiscent of a Endless Runner which is a little weird, given that it isn't. Given that its levels are quite long and its upgrade system works across the levels, however, and players would be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Whatever it might be, Deep War is quite fun in a simple kind of way.

Players control a submarine as they navigate 8 perilous levels full of fish, enemy scuba divers and enemy ships. The objective is to collect numerous pieces of meteorite while also surviving to the next stage. It's a simple enough idea and one backed up with similarly simple yet effective controls. A virtual d-pad controls proceedings with auto firing dictating weapons. Torpedoes can be collected along the way, thus adding to the firepower of the player's sub.

Because of this, all the player needs to do is line up their shots well and drag up or down to dodge incoming fire. Oddly, this creates a somewhat relaxed effect, despite the game's potentially explosive nature. As the levels progress, things get harder but the simplicity means it never feels too frustrating. That simplicity is a double edged sword, however, as nothing about Deep War particularly develops either.

Points and meteorite acquisition are used to fund the purchase of torpedoes and sub upgrades, but it rarely feels significantly noticeable. It's just a nice, small bonus, giving players the sense of (false) accomplishment.

That's the problem with Deep War. Once one level has been completed, there's no real evolution. There are no boss fights or real change in the direction of the gameplay, meaning it's not the most thrilling of games. It's fun to play for a short time but become distracted by a superior title and it's likely that Deep War will be forgotten about.
