Windows RT patch among November security updates Featured

By

Microsoft is preparing to release six security bulletins this month, four rated critical, one important and one moderate. Even Windows RT and Server 2012 are affected.

Users of all currently-supported versions of Windows, including the Surface's Windows RT, will have at least one critical security patch to apply this week.

Microsoft has announced that there will be five bulletins variously addressing Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows RT, Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012.

Even Server Core installations of Server 2008 (including R2) and Server 2012 are affected by one or two critical bulletins, depending on the exact version.

The moderate bulletin affects versions of Microsoft's operating system from Vista onwards.

The sixth bulletin, rated important, appears to be specific to Excel. Affected products are Office 2003, 2007, 2008 (Mac), 2010, 2011 (Mac); the Microsoft Office Excel Viewer; and the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3.

The critical and important bulletins all concern issues that allow remote code execution; the moderate bulletin concerns and information disclosure issue.

The updates are scheduled for release on November 14, 2012, at 11am US Pacific Time.

Microsoft has also indicated that the customary update for the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Furthermore, nine non-security updates addressing issues in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows RT, Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012 are also scheduled for release on November's Patch Tuesday.
