AirDrop is a pretty slick app that was first available in OS X Lion. It basically allows any Mac see any other Mac with the protocol enabled on the network, with no configuration or knowledge of file sharing needed. You just drop a file onto any available AirDrop icon, and your file heads over to that user’s Mac. No muss, no fuss, just simple.
At least, that’s the concept. In reality, I’ve not seen AirDrop ever work that easily. Luckily, there’s an alternative that’s even simpler: Any Send, a free Mac app that lets you send files to any other Mac using WiFi.
Grab Any Send from the Mac App Store, and install it. Once it’s downloaded, it will be accessible in your Applications folder as well as Launch Pad, where all good Mac App Store apps go when they’re ready to use. Launch the app, run through the three step tour, and you’re ready to go.
Now, install Any Send on your second Mac, or send your friend to grab a copy of Any Send for their Mac. Once it’s downloaded, installed, and launched on the second (or third, or fourth) Mac, you’ll be able to click on the Any Send icon that now resides in the menu bar of any of the Macs with the app running, and send any file along to any other Mac, as long as they’re on the same WiFi network. As the Tour says, it’s ridiculously simple.
The Mac receiving the file will get a message that lets them know you’re trying to send them a file. They can decline, or click OK and the file will move across. You can also set up Any Send to auto-accept files from any trusted Mac by clicking on the Always button to accept the file.
