Evernote 5 for Mac Launches After Major Overhaul
Evernote 5 for Mac has launched following a year-long re-imagining of the desktop app.
Evernote for Mac got re-imagined look and a more accessible user interface today in an update that caters to new and long-time users.
"We explored the changing role of sharing and collaboration within Evernote and the opportunities we have to make them more useful," Andrew Sinkov, vice president of marketing, said in a blog post about the update. "We considered search and the ways that we could make it feel like it was one step ahead of your thoughts. In short, it's the Evernote we've always wanted."
The left panel — most users' starting point — has been updated with new options, now including Shortcuts for quick access to favorite notes, notebooks, tags, and saved searches, as well as Recent Notes, where the five most recently edited or created notes reside.
The Notes, Notebooks, Tags, and Atlas icons stand out, keeping data organized and the sidebar uncluttered. Each section may look familiar, but has inevitably been updated. Click on Notes to see all saved notes in a single view. Notebooks now integrates both the user's own lists as well as those notebooks shared with them.
Atlas, meanwhile, is a new function, which, much like Instagram's new Map feature, visualizes the location in which each note was created. "It's more than just what the memory is," Sinkov said, "but also where it was created and who else may have been there." All notes can be viewed on one map, or via separate Place Cards, which drill down to city-level thumbnails.
A similar card view has also been integrated into the revamped Notes List, which now provides the option to turn notes from snippets into framed boxes, and back again. All notes can be sorted by notebook or tag.
Major search improvements also come along with Evernote 5, including the updated Type Ahead algorithm that begins suggesting searches based on content inside the user's account.
