Discovering new and great music is something that used to be quite hard to do, at least, for those of us who don't have friends who know about all the latest artists coming our way. Apps like Band of the Day go some way to making it easier to discover new and exciting tracks, long before the artists really make it big.

Each day of the year, Band of the Day offers up a chosen band to highlight. Users can listen to a number of songs for free via the streaming facility, as well as opt to buy other tracks or albums via iTunes. Alongside the audio, it's also possible to read up on the band, how they came about and anything else interesting or relevant on them. In terms of this side of things, it's almost overwhelming how much detail is offered with their origins and analysis of their tracks, offered alongside insight into their albums and tracks. A selection of videos frequently accompanies the artists, also. Tweets about the band are also offered, although there's no guarantee that these will promise to be particularly insightful, they do offer an extra layer of content.

It's attractive stuff, and quite beguiling to browse through. The prospect of new artists each day is all the more tantalizing and interesting. Resisting merely demonstrating a preview of three tracks is a smart move as I found myself taking in a wider variety of tracks than I normally would, as some really grew on me the longer they played.

Social features ensure it's easy to share new found discoveries with others, but the focus is squarely on discovering talent for one's self. While I wasn't able to test it out for myself, I've no doubt that AirPlay support will prove to be all the more popular for regular music listeners, especially once combined with the app's 5hr long mixtape functionality. All in all, Band of the Day is a high quality app for music fans keen to find out more.
