Report: Your Kid Wants An iPad For Christmas

This article is more than 10 years old.

Wondering what to get your kids for Christmas or Hannukah this year? Wonder no more. They want iPads. According to a survey by Nielsen, 48% of kids 6 to 12 say they want iPads this holiday season.

And we're not even talking iPad Minis here, these kids want the full-sized deal for $500. Only 36% of the kids surveyed said they'd prefer the $329 iPad Mini.

As a parent of two kids in the demographic, I have to wonder if there's a difference here between "wanting" and "getting." My kids want a lot of stuff. They want everything they see on the ads on TV. Of course they covet my iPad. But there's no way I would buy either of them their own iPad.

Maybe I'm in the minority here. But I've seen my kids break almost everything they touch. They don't do it willfully. But at 6 and 9, they're just not that careful. They're also prone to losing things. I handed my old iPod down to my daughter and a few months ago I wanted to put some new music on there for her. But when I went to look for it, the iPod was nowhere to be found.

Turns out she had lost it weeks before and never told me. It did eventually turn up but if the same thing happened with a $500 iPad, I'd be livid.

I'm curious to hear if you'd buy an iPad for an under-10 child. I can be a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology for my kids. As it is they watch, more TV that I would like them to and they play with their DS’ an awful lot.

My daughter has currently become obsessed with Minecraft. I have no idea why. But she wants nothing more in this world than for me to download the full game onto my iPad so she can play it for hours and hours.

Personally, that doesn’t seem like a great use of a 9-year-olds time. She could be studying, drawing, sewing or even reading for pleasure.

Other things kids want on the Nielsen survey: Nintendo Wii U, iPod Touch, iPod Mini and iPhone. Looks like Apple’s going to clean up this holiday season, just not in my house.

Would you buy your young kid an iPad?
