vjay for iPhone (sold separately for the iPad) isn’t a video editing app. It’s a real-time video mixing solution designed for iOS devices. Scratch, mix and mash-up music and videos to create impressive works of art.

vjay doesn’t come with a quick start-up tutorial so using the app can be a little confusing at first. After pressing and tapping the on-screen buttons for a few minutes, users shouldn't have a problem figuring out how to use it. The app works in either landscape or portrait mode so pick whichever one feels the most comfortable.

In order to get started, users must first add video and audio into the app. Tapping on the music note and film button opens up another screen. There are over 15 exclusive free video clips from superstars like Far East Movement and J-Live. Users can also add their own video clips, take a video with the Camera Roll, add music from iTunes or browse the iTunes store to find media to use.

There are plenty of tools to use to mix and create videos. Since the mixing is done in real-time, users don’t have to worry about splicing or looking for transitions. Instead, the app uses scratch pads with different effects. There’s also a mixing window with more features like transitions and blending as well as advanced audio tools, special effects, and loops.

It’s possible to then record the video and save it to the Camera Roll to view later or share with friends. Those looking for live sessions can send the video to their TV through AirPlay or an HDMI cable.

As mentioned earlier, there’s no quick start tutorial to get users started. However, the app does have a hidden tips and trick section for anyone who may need a little help. The real disappointment is that users will need an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 or the new iPod touch 5th generation in order to use the app. It’s also a let down that it isn’t universal.

vjay appears to work flawlessly. The app doesn’t lag, there’s a fair amount of free videos to get started, and the wide variety of effects and mixing tools means there’s plenty to keep users satisfied. Whether users are aspiring DJs or looking for a way to impress friends at a party, vjay is the perfect pocket companion to keep on hand.
