Freeze! is an interesting physics puzzler that will either have players gleefully engaged or filled with frustration. Either way, a game that can evoke either of these emotions is worth taking a look at. With minimalistic graphics and a great physics engine, the developer Andreas von Lepel definitely has something entertaining to offer the puzzle game genre.

The first thing that I learned to appreciate in Freeze! were the graphics. Great care and time was given to produce the minimalistic yet stunning artwork. Fortunately, the artwork isn’t all this game has going for it. The gameplay is fun, challenging and maybe even a little maddening, but it has an allure to it that will make players want to continue.

Freeze! focuses on an unnamed hero that is basically just an eyeball. He has been imprisoned and must now find away out of a variety of floating labyrinths that he is confined to. Players will need to tilt the labyrinths using their fingers to roll the character around obstacles to reach a spinning portal that will carry him onward. The physics of the game will take some getting used to but once players get the hang of it they will need to use some brainpower and patience to complete all the levels. The key to completing levels is by strategically using the “Freeze” button. This button will freeze gravity and lock the character in place. This will allow the maze to be shifted around him to get past tricky obstacles. Using the freeze button is vital to success but must be used wisely as it can only be used a certain amount of times in each level.

One aesthetic downfall of the game is the gameplay hint system. These hints pop up over the game like old iOS notifications in the blue, rectangular boxes. While this certainly isn’t a deal breaker, I would have liked to see them implemented in a more integrated way.

The game comes with 25 free levels that naturally increase in difficulty as players progress. Additional levels can be unlocked through an in-app purchase of $0.99. This is a one-time fee and more levels will soon be available in future updates. The 25 free levels are well done and will give players a good idea of what they are getting into before they invest in the full version.

Overall I have been really impressed by Freeze!. The gameplay is straightforward and provides enough challenge to get me frustrated but equally as happy once I completed a level. Puzzle enthusiasts will definitely want to give this one a shot.
