Super Word Scramble is a word game that has the basics figured out but not the finer details that would propel it to greatness.

Super Word Scramble is the latest word game to hit the App Store. It's got the foundations of a very enjoyable game but a few presentational aspects let it down.

The key behind the game is to solve (or unscramble as the game prefers to call it) the themed anagram, then move onto the next one, and so forth. All with the aim to accrue the highest score yet. Three different modes are on offer, although each is pretty similar in terms of aim. A Levels Mode provides a form of structure to proceedings, given it moves players onto the next theme of words, while Timed adds some further urgency to the game. Relaxed is as predictable as it sounds, removing any concerns about a time limit.

Super Word Scramble promises a fairly impressive selection of over 1,300 words that must be solved, amongst numerous categories. These categories range from animals, geography and vegetables to biblical references, occupations and business terms. It's a varied bunch and all can prove quite challenging after a time.

There's a hints system to help players but, with only one hint available for each word, sometimes it's not as easy as it sounds. It doesn't line a few letters up correctly, merely leaving players to solve the hint for themselves. The controls themselves are similarly unrefined with letters being swapped with each other, rather than 'bumping' the letters down one. It's a small thing but an irritant, nonetheless, especially when up against the clock.

Worst of all, though, is the lack of Game Center support. Something that immediately reduces the replayability potential of Super Word Scramble. This is solely a game to play alone, with no chance of competing with friends or random players. One small omission such as this can make a surprisingly huge difference.

There's fun to be had from Super Word Scramble but it's unrefined and flawed. It's more forgivable at $0.99, but still means it's more of a 'if nothing else stands out' kind of purchase.
